If you know a little about MIDI then this is not the book for you. Most of MIDI you learn by playing around with it.8 of 8 people found the following review helpful.Not Clearly WrittenBy Michael J. MadiganMidi is not that complicated. But there are some basic points that are very fundamental to understand. For instance, it is important to understand that Midi is a protocol for recording and transmitting information about notes and note length, rather than a format for recording the audio waves themselves. It is also important to understand that a keyboard is used generally for two discrete functions: for recording a string of note information and for playing back note information as sound. Each of these functions can be handled by other devices (for instance, the note information can be recorded on a keyboard controller while the note information can be played back by a software synthesizer on the keyboard).This book unfortunately complicates important ideas like this by digressing into topics like "the history of Midi" and various unusual instruments and set-ups. The book would be better if it concentrated on explaining the basics of a modern Midi studio setup before covering other topics and if the individual sections were better organized.See all 2 customer reviews...
