When I was younger, I placed little significance in the stories they told of their childhood, in which there was no electricity, and no cars, and travel was on foot, on a mule, or on a horse, and everyone knew how to drive a wagon. I thought everyone in their generation had grown up that way, but this book made me realize that I am now part of the last generation of people living in Tenn., perhaps to be exposed to a lifestyle so close to nature. For we lived like that when I was a child.Yes, we had electricity and better heat than a wood stove. But, my grandmother still heated with a primitive wood stove alone. And we didn't create garbage--everything was composted. We raised most of our food in the garden, or obtained it by hunting. It was hard work, and I didn't appreciate at the time how rare that way of life was becoming. My grandmother still had a mattress she had made, with her mother, from goose-down feathers. She was the last generation of women in our family who still knew how to weave, but my mother and she still sewed, saving every scrap of fabric including flour sacks, made rugs from rags, knitted and crocheted and tatted. And my father, though lacking much formal education, knew a great deal about plants and animals, much of which he had learned from his own parents and from growing up in the out-of-doors as a full-time farmer without modern farm equipment.This book is a labor of love, and it brought up strong nostalgia for me. I think the author is very accurate in his portrayal of the time and place and the circumstances. My childhood was spent in Paris (in the 1950's) but we were constantly (as in once or twice per week) going to Big Sandy to check on my grandparents and relations still living there, so I've seen both towns very well. My congratulations to the author on this accomplishment. I love the book. I don't know if it will have as much meaning for people who didn't come from the area, but it could, because it represents a now-almost-lost way of life and has important historic implications for how quickly and radically life has changed from that bucolic existence to today's urban one.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful.History of the 23rd district of Henry County TennesseeBy Reviewer"Lynn"South Of The Mouth Of Sandy is a true story of the old 23rd district of Henry County that comprised of an area at the mouth of the Big Sandy and Tennessee Rivers. The story has a lot of history behind it and no names have been changed to protect the innocent. It is the true story of moonshiners, and the subsequent murder of one Tommy Evans. One thing you did not do is squeal on moonshiners. When you have the Christians against the Moonshiners as the old saying goes , all heck can break loose. This story was so newsworthy that the 1927 May Issue of True Detective published in their magazine.Before all this took place will follow the linage of the Evans family from Wales to Virginia and North Carolina to the state of Tennessee along with many other families that made their living farming on the banks of the river. It was not uncommon for a family to have at least seven children if not more to be able to help with the farming. And with just a few in the community sisters would marry brothers of the neighbors and it seems then all families would be connected through marriage.For most readers this will be a great history lesson into the backwoods of Henry County Tennessee before the creating of the TVA and Kentucky Lake. For us that live here, myself included, in the Antioch area now in the 21st century, that lived within a half mile of some Evans family we stop to wonder, were they part of the family from back then. The names in the books that today there are many still in the area with that last name, were they part of the old 23rd district. Where resorts now sit on the lake, years ago there were stills there instead. Excellent history lesson on Henry county and Paris Tennessee, Stewart county and Dover Tennessee, Big Sandy and Benton County. Even though it's now a wildlife district if you ask people today they will tell you they stay out of the 23rd district area, especially at night.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.A regional snapshot of American history.By C. M. SDiscovered this book as I was researching my family history at the Genealogy Center in Salt Lake City. My family roots are traced back to the Carolinas and Big Sandy also Tennessee and my Great Grandfather and his son appear in chapter 6 of this book as they were the ones pulled from the jail, hung and shot in an episode of vigilante justice. I had known of the incident but to read it in print was astounding to me and I ordered two copies of the book to pass through the Hartley/Nobles family. I have yet to read the book though my father read a copy and my daughter is reading another currently, they said it is a good read and anyone familiar with this area of the country will be interested in the references to specific places and families that lived and scraped by in this impoverished and often brutal time in America.See all 9 customer reviews...
